Two Decades of Carbon Flux from Forests of the Pacific Northwest

چکیده
arth's climate is greatly influenced by carbon dioxide conE centrations in the atmosphere, which have increased by approximately 25% since the dawning of the Industrial Revolution, when fossi l fuel combustion accelerated greatly (IPCC 1990). Another important anthropogenic source of atmospheric carbon is associated with deforestation, especially in primary forests, which can store large amounts of carbon in the form of organic biomass (Detwiler and Hall 1988, Harmonetal. 1990). Attempts to balance the global carbon budget have indicated that 20%-50% (1-3 Pg/yr) of the carbon released to the atmosphere from anthropogenic sources cannot be accounted for or fully explained (Dale et al. 1991, Dixon et al. 1994, Post et al. 1990, Sarmiento 1993). Recent efforts to decrease uncertainty in global carbon cycling processes have focused on improving estimates of land-use change in the tropics (Dale et al.

Aging in Pacific Northwest forests: a selection of recent research.
This paper provides an overview of the work reported at a symposium on age-related changes in the structure and function of forests in the United States Pacific Northwest. Some of the work presented at this meeting is reported in the peer-reviewed papers comprising this journal issue. Age-related changes in leaf structure, CO2 assimilation rate, stable carbon isotope ratio, nitrogen concentrati...

[1] Disturbance processes of various types substantially modify ecosystem carbon dynamics both temporally and spatially, and constitute a fundamental part of larger landscape-level dynamics. Forests typically lose carbon for several years to several decades following severe disturbance, but our understanding of the duration and dynamics of post-disturbance forest carbon fluxes remains limited. ...
متن کاملCarbon consequences of forest disturbance and recovery across the conterminous United States
[1] Forests of North America are thought to constitute a significant long-term sink for atmospheric carbon. The United States Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program has developed a large database of stock changes derived from consecutive estimates of growing stock volume in the U.S. These data reveal a large and relatively stable increase in forest carbon stocks over the las...
متن کاملForest management scenarios in a changing climate: trade-offs between carbon, timber, and old forest.
Balancing economic, ecological, and social values has long been a challenge in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, where conflict over timber harvest and old-growth habitat on public lands has been contentious for the past several decades. The Northwest Forest Plan, adopted two decades ago to guide management on federal lands, is currently being revised as the region searches for a balance be...
متن کاملLarge carbon release legacy from bark beetle outbreaks across Western United States.
Warmer conditions over the past two decades have contributed to rapid expansion of bark beetle outbreaks killing millions of trees over a large fraction of western United States (US) forests. These outbreaks reduce plant productivity by killing trees and transfer carbon from live to dead pools where carbon is slowly emitted to the atmosphere via heterotrophic respiration which subsequently feed...
